This reduction in capacity especially weighed on European traffic. KLM also experienced significant snowfalls at Schiphol. As a consequence of these adjustments, capacity was up 0.4% while traffic was stable. The load factor stood at 81.4% (-0.3 points). The number of passengers amounted to 5.5 millions (-3.8%). Unit revenue per available seat kilometre (RASK) ex-currency progressed compared with January 2012.</p><ul><li>On the Americas network traffic and capacity declined by 0.7% and 1.2% respectively. The load factor stood at 87.4% (+0.5 points) underpinned by Latin America.</li><li>The Asia network was dynamic with a 5.0% rise in traffic. Capacity was up 6.9%, giving a load factor of 83.8%, down 1.5 points.</li><li>The Africa and Middle East network recorded a 1.5% increase in traffic for capacity up by 1.8%. The load factor was virtually stable at 80.2% (-0.2 points).</li><li>On the Caribbean and Indian Ocean network capacity was down 4.1% and traffic by 2.8%. The load factor gained 1.2 points to 86.7%.</li><li>The European network was the most affected by the weather conditions. As a result capacity was down 2.4% while traffic declined 4.3%. The load factor fell 1.3 points to 67.0%.</li></ul><p><br /><strong>Cargo business</strong><br />In January 2013, traffic and capacity were down by 2.9% and 1.3%. The load factor declined by 1.0 point to 60.4%. Unit revenue per available tonne kilometre (RATK) ex-currency was slightly down compared with January 2012.</p><p><br /><strong>Recent developments</strong></p><ul><li><em>Air France</em> is pursuing the restructuring of its short- and medium-haul network within the framework of the &lsquo;Transform 2015&rsquo; plan. The company launched a new fares offer to 58 destinations within its medium-haul network. On 28 January Air France also launched its new company, Hop! Regrouping its regional subsidiaries, Brit Air, Airlinair and Regional. Passenger numbers stood at 5.75 million (+5.3%). The rise in unit revenue per available seat kilometer (RASK) was however insufficient to offset the increase in the fuel bill.</p><ul><li>On the Americas network the 3.8% increase in capacity was mainly driven by Latin America, with North America having recorded a capacity reduction. Traffic rose on both networks, (+8.3%). The load factor therefore gained 3.7 points.</li><li>The timing of Chinese New Year in January this year, as well as the ongoing effects of last year&rsquo;s disaster in Japan saw a 2.3% decline in both traffic and capacity on the Asia network. The load factor remained stable at 85.3%.</li><li>The Africa and Middle East network saw a 2.1% increase in traffic with capacity down 2.8%. The load factor therefore gained 3.9 points to 80.5%. The Africa network continues to recover, while the Middle East remains affected by political instability.</li><li>On the Caribbean and Indian Ocean network, traffic rose 0.5% with capacity down by 0.5%. The load factor gained 0.9 points to 85.5%.</li><li>The European network saw traffic up 8.1% for capacity up by 2.3%. The load factor stood at 68.2% (+3.6 points).</li></ul><p><br /><br /><strong>Cargo business</strong><br />Cargo recorded a sharp drop in traffic (-10.3%) linked to the weak economy and the timing of CNY. A 6.0% reduction in capacity limited the decline in load factor to 3 points at 61.4%. Unit revenues ex-currency were down on January 2011.</p><p><br /><strong>Recent developments</strong></p><ul><li>Air France has continued to invest in its Business class cabin to offer its customers the best of French lifestyle. In this way, Air France is continuing to enhance its in-flight menu, with dishes designed by top chef Jo&euml;l Robuchon, as well as its cabin interior with the introduction of a new "full-sleep" seat.&nbsp;</li><li>Air France now partners BlueNext, the world&rsquo;s leading environmental trading exchange for CO2 emissions. &nbsp;</li><li>KLM has announced the resumption of four weekly non-stop flights between Amsterdam and Quito. Elsewhere, the geopolitical situation in a number of countries (Ivory Coast, Sahelian region, Tunisia and Egypt) is weighing on revenues.</p><ul><li>On the Americas network, traffic and capacity rose by 1.3% and 1.7% respectively. The load factor declines slightly to 83.4% (-0.3 points).</li><li>The Asia network remained dynamic with traffic up 7.4% for capacity up by 6.4%. The load factor gained 0.7 points to 85.4%.</li><li>The Africa and Middle East network saw traffic up 2.8%, in line with capacity (+2.7%). The load factor remained stable at 76.4%.</li><li>The Caribbean and Indian Ocean network enjoyed a robust level of activity with traffic up 5.4% for stable capacity (+0.2%). The load factor progressed strongly to reach the high level of 84.8% (+4.2 points).</li><li>On the European network, traffic rose 9.3% and capacity by 4.5%. In consequence, the load factor improved 2.8 points to 64.4%.</li></ul><p><strong>Cargo business</strong><br />In January 2011, cargo traffic rose in line with capacity (by 3.4% and 3.3% respectively). The load factor was stable at 64.3%.
