All KLM Dreamliners have been fitted with Premium Comfort Class since last winter, giving travelers extra legroom, enhanced comfort, and a dedicated catering concept.

With the arrival of this final aircraft, KLM now has a modern and efficient Dreamliner fleet to serve passengers for decades to come.

The phase-out of the Boeing 737-800 is part of KLM’s €7 billion investment in fleet renewal. The current Boeing 737s operating on European routes will gradually be replaced by the Airbus A321neo, which produces less noise and CO₂ than the Boeing 737, contributing to a cleaner and quieter future. In January 2026, the second Boeing 737-800 will follow and also head to Twente Airport.

KLM is investing heavily in fleet modernization: on European routes, A320neo and A321neo aircraft will replace the Boeing 737. At KLM Cityhopper, new E195-E2 models are replacing older Embraer 190s. For intercontinental flights, four Boeing 787-10s have recently been added, with the last one expected in early 2026. Next year, the Airbus A350-900 will join the fleet, replacing older Boeing 777s and A330s. Cargo operations are also being renewed: three A350Fs have been ordered to replace the 747 freighters.

With the introduction of the A350, KLM continues to modernize its fleet. The aircraft generates up to 40% less noise and consumes 25% less fuel compared to older-generation aircraft. Thanks to the use of strong, lightweight materials such as composites and titanium, the A350 can cover longer distances with lower emissions.

More sustainable and quieter

The new Airbus A350 constitutes a major step in building a cleaner and quieter fleet, producing 40% less noise and burning 25% less fuel than similar aircraft of the older generation. The hull of the aircraft largely consists of reinforced, lightweight materials (composites and titanium), ensuring that longer distances can be covered with less fuel. In combination with the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other operational innovations and efficiency gains, these new aircraft will significantly contribute to making operations cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient. The Airbus A350 is also important in terms of customer experience, comfort and efficiency.

KLM continues to invest in fleet renewal

In the interests of customer satisfaction, KLM again invested in renewing its fleet in 2018. The Tulip is the third Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to arrive on Dutch soil so far in 2018. The two other Dreamliners touched down earlier this year in January and April. What’s more, KLM added seven new Embraers to its fleet. The latest Dreamliner is the last Boeing 787-9 to arrive for the time being. Expectations are that in June 2019, KLM will take delivery of its first Boeing 787-10.

Boeing 787 emits less CO2

The Boeing 787 produces less surrounding noise, uses less fuel and therefore emits less CO2. This makes the aim of lowering CO2 emissions by 20% in 2020 (compared to 2011) feasible. Less waste is generated during the production phase because the Dreamliner consists largely of easy-to-cut carbon fibre composites.

The aircraft offers a range of passenger benefits in terms of travel comfort. For example, greater air pressure in the cabin means that passengers arrive feeling more rested. And for passengers wanting to stay online during their flight, there’s WiFi on board. The aircraft seats 30 passengers in business class, 48 in economy comfort and 216 in economy
