Earlier, KLM announced that it was exploring a new catering model for Economy Class. Since then, the airline has conducted multiple testing phases across various destinations, evaluating both the product assortment and the supporting operational processes.

KLM has been investing in improving the passenger experience across its European network for some time. The airline has already added 16 Airbus A321neo aircraft and 25 Embraer 195-E2 aircraft to its fleet, featuring modern seats with USB charging ports and larger overhead bins. A few months ago, KLM also introduced complimentary Wi-Fi on European flights.

KLM has made a number of adjustments to its flight schedule for the coming month. This concerns a limited number of flights within Europe that, due to rising kerosene costs, are currently no longer financially viable to operate. There is no kerosene shortage. KLM will operate 80 fewer return flights to and from Schiphol, which is less than 1% of its European flights during that period.

Passengers affected by these changes will be rebooked onto the next available flight. As these are destinations KLM serves multiple times a day — such as London and Düsseldorf — travellers can usually be accommodated quickly.

KLM expects a busy May holiday period and is making sure passengers can travel to their holiday destinations as planned.

KLM’s Boeing 787, which had been at Dubai Airport since Saturday, 28 February, is currently en route to the Netherlands. KLM carefully assessed how this flight could be operated safely. Due to the security situation, additional measures were taken to ensure the safety of the flight. The airline would have preferred to carry passengers, but this was not deemed responsible at this time. KLM remains available to assist with the repatriation of stranded passengers; this is coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The next repatriation flight operated by KLM, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been postponed. The flight from Muscat to Amsterdam was scheduled for 00:45 in the night of 7 to 8 March. The flight has been postponed due to the security situation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is informing the Dutch travellers who were due to be on this flight. The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority. We continue to monitor the situation closely.

On Friday, 6 March, KLM, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will operate a flight from Muscat (Oman) via Cairo to Schiphol. The flight is expected to arrive at Schiphol on Saturday morning.

Stranded Dutch travellers residing in the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs via the Crisis Contact Form and meet the eligibility criteria may be invited by the Ministry to travel on one of these flights.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and KLM are currently preparing to operate another repatriation flight from the Middle East to the Netherlands. Details of the flight will be announced as soon as possible.

The flight is intended for stranded travelers residing in the Netherlands who are staying in the region. Travelers who wish to participate can register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs via the Crisis Contact Form on the website. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will then determine who is eligible for the available seats and contact them. The ministry advises travelers to only come to the airport after receiving confirmation. This is due to the security situation.

Flights will, of course, only be operated if circumstances permit. The safety of passengers and crew is always paramount.

This morning, a KLM aircraft from Muscat landed safely at Schiphol. On board were stranded travelers and KLM colleagues. The flight was operated in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under exceptional circumstances for both passengers and crew.

For the travelers on board, this marks the end of an intense journey. KLM understands how impactful and uncertain the situation is for everyone in the conflict area. In cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other airlines, KLM remains committed to bringing other stranded travelers in the Middle East safely back to the Netherlands.

We are currently receiving many questions regarding the situation in the Middle East and its impact on KLM, our passengers, and our crew. The safety of our passengers and employees is always KLM’s highest priority.

This is what we can share at this time:

• Until March 5, KLM will not operate any flights to or from Dubai, Riyadh, and Dammam.
• KLM does not operate flights to other destinations in the Middle East.
• Passengers whose flights have been canceled have been informed. As soon as possible, they will be rebooked. We are closely monitoring the situation.
• We cannot provide an exact number of KLM passengers currently unable to return from Dubai, Dammam, and Riyadh. The number of cancellations does not tell the full story: some travelers never departed, others only used these destinations to transfer and have since found alternative routes, while for others, these cities are their final destinations because they live there. For this reason, the number of cancellations does not accurately reflect the number of KLM passengers still in the region.
• We are constantly assessing which passengers wish to return and are doing our utmost to inform everyone personally and assist them as quickly as possible. Please also refer to the letter from CEO Marjan Rintel to our passengers in the March 1, 19:15 update.
• For KLM staff currently in the region, we are developing scenarios for their return to the Netherlands.

Due to the geopolitical situation and the closure of various airspaces in the Gulf region, KLM is currently not flying through the airspace of Iran, Iraq, and Israel, nor over several countries in the Gulf region. Because of the uncertainty of the situation, it is not yet clear what this will mean for flights scheduled for tomorrow. Passengers whose flights have been canceled have been informed. Earlier this week, KLM decided, for operational and commercial reasons, to temporarily suspend flights between Amsterdam and Tel Aviv as of March 1.

Based on the most recent safety analysis, we have decided to resume operations to Dammam and Riyadh according to the regular schedule starting Tuesday, January 27. Options for Dubai and Tel Aviv are currently being explored. We are closely monitoring the situation. All passengers who were affected by canceled flights in recent days due to the situation in the Middle East have now been rebooked. Travelers who prefer not to travel anymore may request a refund for their original flight.

Update January 24
Due to the geopolitical situation, KLM is currently avoiding the airspace of Iran, Iraq and Israel as a precaution, as well as the airspace over several countries in the Gulf region. This means that, until further notice, we will not be operating flights to Dubai, Riyadh, Dammam and Tel Aviv. Passengers whose flight has been canceled have been informed. KLM has decided not to rebook passengers onto flights on 24 or 25 January, as other airlines are also canceling flights to the Middle East. Passengers will be rebooked as soon as possible. For many years, KLM has invested in making aviation cleaner, quieter, and more fuel-efficient. In addition to fleet renewal, SAF is one of the most effective ways to significantly reduce aviation’s CO₂ emissions. While SAF produces the same CO₂ emissions during flight as fossil kerosene, its total lifecycle emissions—from production to combustion—are significantly lower, reducing CO₂ by at least 65% and up to more than 90% compared to conventional kerosene.

SAF is currently three to four times more expensive than fossil kerosene. While this plant is an important milestone, further efforts are needed to accelerate production and make SAF more widely available and affordable. It is therefore encouraging that the new coalition agreement includes plans to expand alternative aviation fuels and support SAF production in the Netherlands. KLM calls on the government to work together to accelerate and scale up SAF, for example through a national SAF fund, as recommended in the Wennink report “The Route to Future Prosperity.”

The DSL-01 project demonstrates what is possible, while also underlining the need for more initiatives like this to achieve the Dutch target of 14% SAF blending by 2030.

The improvement in the first half year was partly driven by productivity enhancements, cost-saving measures, and sustained strong demand in both passenger and cargo transport. Revenue per seat increased, particularly on routes to Asia and North and Central America. The Back on Track program yielded €315 million in savings and performed above plan. While this is encouraging, it does not change the fact that KLM still faces a substantial challenge to structurally strengthen its financial foundation.

Changing World Requires Further Strengthening 
KLM recognizes that the challenges for the aviation sector have evolved. Geopolitical tensions lead to cancellations, re-routings, and volatile fuel prices. Simultaneously, costs are rising, for example, for materials, personnel, and airport charges.

Bas Brouns, CFO KLM: “We are moving in the right direction, but more is needed to make KLM more financially resilient. The results provide confidence, but not comfort. Therefore, we continue to invest in factors that strengthen our competitive position, while critically evaluating every euro spent. This is the only way to make the progress we are currently seeing sustainable.”

Cargo, Engineering & Maintenance, and Transavia 
Cargo showed clear improvement thanks to strong market demand, particularly from Asia. Engineering & Maintenance improved its results due to growth in external work and operational improvements. Transavia operated in a highly competitive market, where its focus on affordable holiday flights put pressure on margins.

Outlook 
For the second half of the year, KLM continues to anticipate uncertainties. Developments in the Middle East and their potential impact on fuel prices, airspace, and global trade flows remain difficult to predict. Therefore, KLM maintains its focus on operational reliability, further productivity enhancements, cost control, and a strong financial position.

The pilots will be given the flexibility to apply their knowledge and experience as reservists while continuing their careers in commercial aviation. This collaboration helps retain valuable aviation expertise within the Netherlands and further strengthens the connection between civil and military aviation.

In addition to the six reservists, one KLM pilot will be seconded to Texas from September for a four-year period as an instructor, training future fighter pilots.

Exploring cooperation on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
KLM and the Ministry of Defence are also exploring opportunities to collaborate on alternative aviation fuels, specifically Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Particular focus is being placed on the development and application of e-SAF (synthetic sustainable aviation fuel), a key technology for further decarbonising aviation and strengthening the strategic energy independence of the Netherlands and Europe.

Both organisations see opportunities to combine their knowledge, expertise and networks to support the development and deployment of these fuels.

Innovation
Through the HYPERION project, the Ministry of Defence and KLM Engineering & Maintenance are working together on solutions to make aircraft maintenance more efficient and sustainable. This includes further digitalisation and the application of data-driven maintenance.

Secure and transparent information exchange improves component availability, shortens turnaround times and increases operational readiness. Through this project, KLM and Defence are developing a new model for collaboration in aircraft maintenance, further strengthening the Netherlands’ leading position in this field.

Last month, KLM and the Ministry of Defence also announced that seven KLM engineers will begin training with the Royal Netherlands Air Force in September.

During WorldPride Amsterdam 2026, KLM and Delta Air Lines will take part in several elements of the program together. Both airlines will participate with a shared boat in the Canal Parade, march together in the Pride March, and host their booth on Museumplein at the WorldPride Village. 

In addition, KLM will support several initiatives that may be less visible to the general public but are closely aligned with the values of WorldPride. For example, KLM will host six international LGBTIQ+ representatives at the Pride House, a dedicated location in Amsterdam at Hotel Sofitel Legend The Grand, through a special invitation program. They come from countries where it is not a given that people can openly be themselves or celebrate Pride. KLM wants to offer them a safe and welcoming environment in Amsterdam so they can fully take part in everything WorldPride has to offer. 

Attention to Pride Beyond Amsterdam 
KLM is also recognizing Pride outside Amsterdam. This year, KLM will operate two special Pride flights. On June 28, an LGBTIQ+ crew and allies flew to Toronto, where Pride took place, and the flight was festively welcomed by choreographer and dancer Blake McGrath. On July 24, KLM Cityhopper will fly to Berlin in the lead-up to the celebration of Berlin Pride. 

KLM’s involvement with the LGBTIQ+ community extends beyond WorldPride alone. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Over the Rainbow, the internal network for LGBTIQ+ employees and allies. The network plays an active role in promoting awareness, connection, and an inclusive work environment within KLM.

Mathieu Essenberg (1973) has been with KLM since 2002. He has held management positions at KLM Cityhopper and Flight Operations. At Engineering & Maintenance, he was responsible from 2018 as SVP Airframe/Operations for aircraft maintenance for the KLM fleet and global customers. In 2022, as EVP Hub Operations, he led the Ground Services (GS) division, and in 2025 he returned to E&M as Executive Vice President. Mathieu also works as a pilot, first at KLM Cityhopper and later at KLM. Since 2017, he is a captain on the B-737.

There was strong interest within KLM in participating in the Defence training program. Mathieu Essenberg, EVP KLM Engineering & Maintenance, said: “At KLM, we have highly experienced technicians who work every day to ensure the safety of our fleet. It is valuable that, through this training, they can apply their expertise in a different environment while also gaining new knowledge. In this way, we are not only strengthening our own organization, but also contributing to the resilience of the Netherlands.”

Commodore Ellen Meeuwsen-Scholten, Director of Personnel at the Dutch Royal Air Force, emphasized the importance of the partnership: “The cooperation between KLM and the Dutch Royal Air Force shows how government and industry can work together to contribute to the resilience of the Netherlands. By giving technical personnel the opportunity to gain experience within Defence, we are building scalable capacity that can be deployed when the situation calls for it. At the same time, they become familiar with Defence processes, working methods, and culture, enabling them to make a valuable contribution to the operational readiness of the Air Force at crucial moments.”

KLM and the Ministry of Defence are working together to exchange knowledge and make smarter use of personnel and resources so that both organizations are more resilient in emergency situations. They are also exploring ways to intensify cooperation in the areas of component and engine maintenance. As part of this effort, KLM and the Ministry of Defence are examining how existing civil infrastructure, such as the facilities at Schiphol-East and Schiphol-Rijk, including Regional Jet Center and EPCOR, can be used to optimal effect. They are also exploring whether a new facility dedicated specifically to military maintenance could be developed in the future.

In addition to this technical cooperation, the parties are also looking more broadly at opportunities to join forces in other areas.

First Commercial Flight in September
The Airbus A350 is part of KLM’s ongoing fleet renewal. The aircraft is quieter and more fuel-efficient than the previous generation of aircraft it will replace. The aircraft is being built in Toulouse and has now been fully painted in KLM’s distinctive livery. Over the coming months, it will undergo final preparations before being delivered to KLM at the end of the summer. The aircraft is scheduled to operate its first passenger flight in September, with Toronto as its inaugural destination.

Certification of World Business Class Seats
The Airbus A350 features a total of 331 seats: 34 seats in World Business Class (WBC), 26 seats in Premium Comfort, and 271 seats in Economy Class. Due to a revised interpretation of regulatory requirements by the aviation authorities, certification of the World Business Class seats has not yet been completed. As a result, these seats will unfortunately not be available when the first two aircraft enter service. The seat manufacturer is working hard to complete the certification process as quickly as possible and make this cabin class available to customers at the earliest opportunity. Premium Comfort, which offers additional legroom, enhanced comfort, and a dedicated onboard dining experience, will be available from day one.

Fleet Renewal
Over the coming years, KLM will invest €7 billion in fleet renewal. In addition to the introduction of the Airbus A350 and the Airbus A350F, this investment includes new Embraer 195-E2 aircraft for KLM Cityhopper, the latest Airbus A321neo aircraft for European routes, of which KLM currently operates sixteen, and new Boeing 787 aircraft for intercontinental services.

In this campaign, KLM is also utilizing Sponsored Snaps, a new ad format on Snapchat. KLM is one of the first companies in the Netherlands to use this feature.

KLM already pioneered this in 2021 by operating the first commercial flight using synthetic kerosene to Madrid. Whereas 500 liters of e-SAF could be blended then, only 200 liters are being used now. This shows how great the challenge is: the availability of e-SAF still lags far behind ambitions. Today, only a fraction of the e-SAF mandate imposed by Europe for 2030 is actually in production. Making e-SAF widely available and affordable on a large scale remains, alongside SAF, a major challenge.

Alternative fuels as a priority
KLM supports the European mandate for the use of alternative fuels and will continue to invest in making aviation more sustainable. At the same time, current e-SAF production figures show that the European sub-target of a 1.2% e-SAF blend by 2030 is a major challenge. In addition to the fact that e-SAF is currently four times more expensive than SAF (around eight times more expensive than conventional kerosene), there is as yet no e-SAF production on a large scale. The process of obtaining construction and environmental permits in Europe also plays a role, as does uncertainty over possible changes to ReFuelEU legislation. It therefore remains crucial for governments across Europe to commit and invest in accelerating and scaling up alternative aviation fuels, both SAF and e-SAF.

KLM’s Orange Summer kicked off in festive style today, June 4, with the start of the KLM Open and the special flight taking the Dutch national soccer team to New York.

Early this morning, former top soccer player Ronald de Boer opened the 2026 KLM Open—the oldest international golf tournament in the Netherlands. KLM is the proud title sponsor of this iconic event, which is taking place for the 106th time from June 4 through 7. Under the leadership of tournament director Ruud Gullit, this year’s KLM Open is turning orange: visitors are encouraged to wear orange to The International, and the Dutch players and volunteers are also embracing our national color. Friday evening, June 5 (from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM), will be all about orange vibes, music, and fun. Everyone is welcome to join us in celebrating the start of the Orange sports summer.

Dutch national team flies to New York with KLM

KLM is also operating a special flight today: we are taking the Dutch national team to New York, where “Our Orange” will play its final warm-up match against Uzbekistan on June 8 in the run-up to the World Cup.

Passengers will also notice that the Orange Summer has begun at KLM. To literally bring the World Cup atmosphere on board, KLM will serve a special orange dessert on flights from the United States, Canada, and Mexico to Amsterdam from June 7 through July 25.

This agreement enables Schiphol to further develop this part of the airport and create additional space for passenger operations, aviation activities, and new facilities.

For KLM, the relocation presents an opportunity to create more modern work environments that better align with how we operate today and in the future.

The first flight departed Amsterdam on May 21, 1946, making stops in Prestwick, Scotland, and Gander, Canada, before reaching New York. On board the Douglas C-54 Skymaster were 32 passengers. With this route, KLM became the first European airline to establish a regular connection to the United States, ushering in a new era for transatlantic aviation. Today, KLM and partner Delta Air Lines jointly operate four daily flights between Amsterdam and New York. Last year, KLM carried nearly half a million passengers and more than 17 million kilograms of cargo on this route. This makes the connection important not only for leisure travelers and business passengers, but also for the transport of time-sensitive and high-value goods, such as pharmaceutical products, high-tech equipment, fashion and luxury items, e-commerce shipments, and industrial components. In addition, the route plays an important role in the logistics chain for perishable goods and other specialized cargo flows between Europe and North America. Via New York, KLM also offers travelers access to an extensive network of destinations across North America.

A spirit of pioneering

The launch of the route was made possible in part by the determination of Albert Plesman, founder of KLM. His efforts enabled KLM to move ahead of its competitors and become the first European airline to launch scheduled service to New York. That pioneering spirit has always remained a hallmark of KLM. In the decades that followed, the airline introduced successive new aircraft types on the New York route, from the Boeing 747 to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Today, KLM continues to invest in fleet renewal with the aim of flying cleaner, quieter, and more efficiently.

Anniversary celebrations

KLM is marking this special anniversary today with partners, colleagues, and passengers at The New York Historical museum. To commemorate the occasion, an exclusive Delft Blue miniature house of The New York Historical is unveiled. Produced in a limited edition of 300 pieces, it will be distributed exclusively to guests attending the event. Also opening today at The New York Historical is a temporary exhibition on the history of the route and the longstanding ties between the Netherlands and New York.

Aviodrome, the Dutch aviation museum, is also opening its new exhibition “The PH-TAR and the Journey to the New World” on Thursday, May 21. With this exhibition, the museum commemorates eighty years of transatlantic scheduled service between the Netherlands and the United States. Through historical imagery, the exhibition tells the story of KLM’s first transatlantic flight and highlights how remarkable the direct connection between the Netherlands and New York was at the time. Visitors can also see a Douglas DC-4 painted in the PH-TAR livery, the same type of aircraft used for this historic flight, with its interior carefully restored to its former glory. The exhibition  will be open to visitors from today through the end of 2027.

The ANVR, which represents travel companies in the Netherlands, says affordable travel is increasingly under pressure as air travel taxes continue to rise. 
“For many people, the annual vacation is an important moment to relax and spend time together,” said ANVR Director Frank Radstake. “At the same time, costs are increasing. By 2027, the Dutch air travel tax for long haul flights will rise from around €30 to €72 per ticket, a 140% increase. That places a significant financial burden on travelers, especially compared to neighboring countries.”

Concerns shared by a broad group of travelers
The concerns are not limited to frequent flyers. Dutch travelers who fly only once or a few times a year also say further increases in air travel taxes will affect their travel plans. Nearly two thirds of respondents expect flying to become too expensive for the average Dutch traveler if taxes continue to rise next year.

Growing gap with neighboring countries
According to the ANVR, making aviation more sustainable is essential, but these measures should be effective and coordinated at a European level. Large differences in national tax policies mainly put Dutch travelers at a disadvantage. The difference can become substantial. From 2027, a family of four traveling to Turkey from the Netherlands could pay more than €190 in air travel taxes alone. In Belgium, the same family would pay around €40 for a comparable trip.

“Vacations shouldn’t become something only a small group of people can afford,” said Frank Radstake. “Travel contributes to prosperity, relaxation and wellbeing. It’s also very important that people can continue visiting family and friends abroad.”

Many Dutch travelers also feel there is growing inequality compared to neighboring countries. “From 2027, the Netherlands will have the highest air travel tax in the EU,” Radstake added. “As a result, Dutch travelers will pay significantly more for comparable flights than travelers departing from airports just across the border. That difference isn’t always visible to the consumer, but the additional costs can quickly add up for individuals and families.”

KLM CEO Marjan Rintel said:
“We support the campaign gelijkevliegtaks.eu because travelers could soon face air travel tax increases of 60% or even 140%. Families could end up paying hundreds of euros extra purely in Dutch air travel taxes. With the highest aviation tax in the EU from 2027, Dutch travelers will either be hit hard financially or choose to depart from airports across the border instead. That does not benefit the climate, and if travelers and businesses leave, destinations will disappear. These plans should be reconsidered, and Dutch air travel taxes should be brought back in line with neighboring countries.”

As a precaution, all passengers who were on board this flight are being informed by GGD Kennemerland. RIVM states that there are indications that the hantavirus in question (the Andes strain) can be transmitted from person to person. However, this appears to be very rare. Internationally, only a few such cases have been reported. Moreover, person-to-person transmission occurs only when people have very close contact with one another.

Structural cost control  
The Back on Track improvement program contributed €159 million in savings and additional revenue above expectations to the result in the first quarter. Partly as a result, the cost increase was limited, despite higher airport charges, collective labor agreement wage increases and the financial impact as a result of extreme winter weather. The current developments at the same time emphasize the need for the announced transformation and cost control to make KLM more resilient structurally. An important milestone in the first quarter is the proposed acquisition of KLM Catering Services by Gategroup. In addition, as part of the transformation, KLM is starting a participation program with colleagues from various departments and with stakeholders who are closely involved with KLM. The objective is to develop future scenarios for KLM towards 2030.

Transavia, Cargo and Engineering & Maintenance  
At Transavia, turnover in the first quarter of 2026 was in line with the same period a year earlier. The pressure on turnover resulting from the conflict in the Middle East and snow disruptions was partially offset by lower costs. At Cargo, the wintry weather at the beginning of the year resulted in lower volumes and pressure on revenues. Revenues recovered in March. At Engineering & Maintenance, the result improved compared to last year.

Looking forward  
KLM CFO, Bas Brouns: “We cannot fully pass on the high fuel prices resulting from geopolitical uncertainty to our customers. That puts pressure on the profitability of our operation. Therefore, we have taken measures to respond quickly to the changing circumstances, including through adjustments to the network and tight management of our cash position. Only then can we continue to invest in KLM’s future.”

The evaluation shows that the early January disruption was caused by a combination of factors. Snowfall began earlier and was heavier than forecast, significantly increasing demand for aircraft de-icing and longer handling times. At the same time, it proved difficult to reduce flight volumes quickly and sufficiently. As a result, decision-making and operational scaling occurred later than needed, leading to a disruption with major impact on passengers and staff.

The report concludes that extreme weather conditions in aviation will always lead to delays and cancellations. At the same time, Schiphol and KLM see opportunities to improve their response. They will therefore work together, where necessary, with other airport stakeholders to implement the report’s recommendations. In addition, shareholders approved the reappointment of Marjan Rintel as President & CEO for a new term of four years. Charlotte Dennery-Dufourcq was appointed as a member of the Supervisory Board for a first term of four years, and François Enaud was reappointed as a member of the Supervisory Board for a fourth and final term of two years ending in 2028.

Research conducted by Markeffect (2025) among Dutch consumers suggests that travelers are increasingly likely to consider alternatives outside the Netherlands. According to the findings, 74% of respondents indicated they would be willing to fly from foreign airports if air passenger taxes were to rise further. KLM has cautioned that a higher tax burden compared with neighboring countries could push passengers to use airports outside the Netherlands. Over time, this trend may result in a reduction in demand for Dutch airports and a corresponding decline in available destinations, with broader implications for travelers, businesses, and the Dutch economy. KLM therefore maintains that the Dutch air passenger tax should be more closely aligned with neighboring countries.

KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer 195 E2 aircraft are equipped with engines from the Pratt & Whitney GTF series. In 2024, this manufacturer faced issues regarding engine availability, temporarily rendering the aircraft unusable. Twente Airport, part of Technology Base, proved to be an extremely suitable location for temporary storage. In addition to operational capabilities, the airport also offers facilities for testing, training, and technical maintenance.

Careful preparation and innovative protection

Before the four Embraer 195 E2s were parked at Twente Airport in 2024, they were prepared for long-term storage in accordance with the instructions of aircraft manufacturer Embraer. Engines, auxiliary power units (APUs), and batteries were removed from the aircraft. The aircraft were then completely wrapped in special film—a “cocoon”—to protect both the exterior and interior from weather conditions and other external factors. The wrapping process took six weeks.

Return to Service

Now that availability from Pratt & Whitney has improved, KLM Cityhopper’s aircraft are being gradually prepared for return to service. This week, one of the aircraft is being unpacked: PH-NXA. The protective cover is being removed, the wheels are being installed, and the aircraft is being prepared for initial testing. The aircraft will then undergo a comprehensive check and an airworthiness inspection. Various modifications will also be implemented, such as the installation of Wi-Fi. This process takes approximately two months, after which the aircraft will be fully available again for KLM Cityhopper operations.

The last two Embraer 195 E2s currently still at Twente Airport are expected to return to service this fall.
